From Batley to Brussels: Local Young Campaigner Secures Internship in Europe

Tracy Brabin MP has today offered her congratulations to local young campaigner, Jawad Khan, who is set to embark upon a sought-after internship in Brussels later this month.

The 19-year-old from Liversedge will be working within the Secretariat of the European Trade Union Committee for Education.

A Labour Party and Trade Union campaigner, Mr Khan stood for the Labour Party in the Liversedge and Gomersal ward during the 2016 local elections.

MP for Batley and Spen and Shadow Minister for Early Years, Tracy Brabin said:

“At just 19 years old, Jawad has worked hard on two General Election campaigns, he had the courage to stand to represent his home ward on Kirklees Council last year, and he’s fought for young workers’ rights through the Trade Union movement.

“Jawad is a rising star, and I am very proud to have worked alongside him on his campaigning work locally. He absolutely deserves this opportunity.

“Jawad, like a number of local young people, has undertaken work experience with me, to better understand the work that I do on behalf of Batley & Spen. I believe in the importance of supporting and encouraging our local young people. They are, after all, the future of Batley & Spen”.

Young Campaigner Jawad Khan, said:

“My job will involve researching and monitoring EU policy towards trade unions and education, observing sessions of the EU Parliament and EU Commission, looking at the issues of health and safety, equality and digitalisation in education, helping with the organisational side of ETUCE and working on conferences around Europe.

“I wouldn’t have got this opportunity without all the experiences I’ve gained from working with Tracy Brabin and her team, my time working and volunteering for the GMB trade union and the education given to me by Spen Valley High School, Heckmondwike Grammar School and the University of Manchester.

“It shows that with the right encouragement and support, a working-class lad from Liversedge can end up working at the highest levels of European politics. I’m looking forward to my journey from Batley to Brussels and can’t wait for this exciting new chapter of my life.”
