“I have been contacted by a number of constituents who are concerned about proposed changes to bereavement services in Kirklees.
“On Tuesday, the Council’s cabinet will be asked to make a decision on a report which seeks to develop an updated business model and charging structure for bereavement services. The report can be found online at: https://democracy.kirklees.gov.uk/documents/s19925/9.%20CAB%20-%2017%20-%20029%20-%202nd%20FINAL%202017%2009%2008%20Bereavement%20Cab%20Report%20JB%20SD.pdf
“I welcome the proposal to remove bereavement charges for children. The removal of burial fees for children is a campaign that I have long supported in Parliament and I am delighted to see that our local Council are considering implementing this important change.
“However, I have listened to public concerns about proposals relating to year-on-year increases in burial charges which would see the charge for one internment rise from £989 to £1,798 by 2021/22. I have therefore spoken today to both the Leader, and the Deputy Leader of Kirklees Council to relay these concerns to them, and to request a full briefing.
“It is clear to me that swingeing cuts by this Conservative Government to our Local Authority, are forcing the Council to take incredibly difficult decisions. Once I have received my briefing from Kirklees Council, I will make representations to Government about their cuts’ impact to my constituents’ access to bereavement services where appropriate.”
