Batley & Spen’s MP Tracy Brabin marked this years Armed Forces Day by attending a rugby league match in Batley.
Armed Forces Day is a chance to celebrate the work of our Service Personnel, Veterans, cadets and service families. It takes place on the last Saturday of June, this year on Saturday the 24th of June with events taking place across the weekend.
One local event as part of a national calendar of events saw Batley Bulldogs Ladies face off against Army Rugby League Women in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup. The Army team included women currently serving in our armed forces.
After a hard fought match the Army Rugby League team progressed to the final after running out 18-12 winners, where they will face the York City Knights.
Commenting, Tracy Brabin MP said;
“Armed Forces Day is an important day in our national calendar when we pause to thank those serving our country, keeping us safe and also give respect to former service men and women.
“Batley hosted a wonderful rugby league match and although we all cheer the local team, no one would begrudge our servicewomen their deserved victory on the day.
“It was a huge privilege to talk to some of our young cadets from B Regiment and to get chance to hear about the work they do with young people from orienteering, target practice, wild camping and first aid. I was particularly interested to chat to a young cadet who comes from a family of firefighters with ambitions to go to Sandhurst. Led by the brilliant Sharon, Serjeant-at-arms, I have no doubt he’ll get there.
“It’s wonderful that we have a day that recognises the hard work and bravery of the forces community but of course we need to be supporting them year round and the Government must ensure that our Armed Forces are getting a good deal on pay, welfare, housing and services. Shamefully, the quality of life for too many of ex-service personnel is falling short of what we’d expect.
“Our service men and women stand up for us every day so it’s important we stand up for them, by Armed Forces Day next year I hope we have a better deal celebrate.”
