Batley and Spen’s sitting Labour MP Tracy Brabin launched her campaign for re-election with a speech to supporters in Batley Town Square on Saturday 22nd April.
Ms Brabin was first elected to represent her home community on the 20th October 2016 and remains Yorkshire’s newest Member of Parliament.
As evidence of the broad range of support Ms Brabin enjoys, she was joined by Deputy Labour Leader Tom Watson and actor John Middleton, most recognised for playing Ashley in popular soap opera Emmerdale.
Speaking at the launch event Ms Brabin, who has spoken in the Commons 61 times and asked 71 Written Questions since being elected said, “There’s a proper passion to get a strong Yorkshire voice back in the House of Commons.”
Lamenting the Tories record locally the MP warned if a “weak Tory cheerleader” was elected in Batley and Spen they’d wave through the downgrade of Dewsbury’s A&E, planned school funding cuts which will leave every school in Batley and Spen worse off and police cuts which have already seen a reduction of 1,200 officers locally since 2010, she said “this is unacceptable, when the Tories look at communities like ours, all they see is an opportunity to take, they don’t want to give us a fair deal but I’m determined that we will get that fair deal.”
On Brexit she said, “I voted in favour of triggering Article 50 and believe we can get a good deal from leaving the EU but we need a strong Yorkshire voice in Parliament to get it. We need someone who is going to fight hard for our businesses, fight for the hopes and dreams of our young people and fight for your rights at work.”
“If you put your faith in me once again, I promise you’ I’ll be on your side, fighting your corner.”
Deputy Labour Leader Tom Watson said, “I’m here for one reason, because I think Tracy is one of the hardest working MPs in Parliament. She’s already made a name for herself after only winning a by-election a few months ago. She is a powerful voice for Batley and Spen and I want her to be a powerful voice after the election, so support her all you can.”
John Middleton said, “I know Tracy to be strong, loyal and great voice for this area.”
